1972

This photo was taken in 1972.  I was only 30 years old, an age, by the way, that I loved becoming.  At last, I thought, I’m a grown up!   Now I look at 30 year olds and they seem so very young.  Perspective! lol

The people in this photo, left to right:

Baby sister Mary K; me with Noel, who was seven; my mother, age 55…and just before she started having illnesses, surgeries, etc. that began the limiting of her life; my maternal grandmother, whom I dearly loved…she taught me to sew, to crochet, to love Constant Comment tea;  sister-in-law Debbie, about the time she married my brother; Aunt Marian, my mother’s SIL (now deceased).

My parents, back in those days, used to host wonderful picnics on their patio. Dad grilled the steaks, mom made her wonderful macaroni salad, still the best I’ve had; family and friends gathered, talked, ate, just had a great time together.

That seems like another world when I look back on it.

Here are a few historical facts from 1972 (From Bernard Grun’s The Timetables of History):

  • President Nixon visits China and Russia
  • The "Watergate" affair begins with the arrest of five men inside Democratic National Headquarters
  • Ceylon becomes a republic and changes its name to Sri Lanka
  • Arab terrorists kill two Israeli Olympic athletes in Munich and take nine others hostage
  • Harry Truman dies
  • "Grease"  and "Jesus Christ Superstar" open
  • Films:  "Caberet," "The Godfather," "The French Connection"
  • Bobby Fischer wins world chess title by defeating Boris Spassky
  • The military draft is phased out in the U.S.
  • "All in the Family" is the leading U.S. tv show
  • The Dow-Jones Index closes above 1,000 for the first time

So there you have it, a quick look back to what really was a long time ago.  And yet, the plays and movies mentioned are all still popular;  the events in Munich have been immortalized in an Oscar nominated film; and Nixon’s visit to China surely paved the way for all the  "made in China"  tags on our clothes, toys, and housewares.    And, of course, we still have an all-volunteer military.

Peace!

I wasn\’t even born – tail end of \’73.  But I was very happy to turn 30 as I didn\’t like my 20\’s until I was around 28 or so.

So at least I can comment from that stand point!!

Thank you for asking that…I just entered a blog with a note at the bottom saying that all you need to do now is cut and paste in the picture.  I don\’t use the MSN Spaces feature at the bottom…Add photos.  Instead I upload them to Photobucket (an image host) and then paste in the URL code.  I do this for just my own personal pix.  Here\’s a place you can go to get some more info on getting it setup.  He uses imageshack which is the same type of photo host as Photobucket.  There\’s lots of good stuff at his site for tweaking your blog.  Hope this helps.  Cindy

1972 doesn\’t seem so long ago, but then I think…no computers, no DVDs, no videotape, no disco yet.  OMG, the 70\’s were the stone age!

    Hi Barb,
What a great picture. Nice you have it to remember how everyone looked back then. Boy, I remember everything you mentioned except Sri Lanka.
I\’m surprised we haven\’t started the draft again with all the controversy with our troops being deployed several times.
    Thanks for visiting my space.
Wishing you a great weekend. Is hubby still away?
    Hugs,
    Pat

Hi Barb 🙂  Hope you\’re having a wonderful Friday evening.

Great post!  It does seem like a lifetime ago.  I liked the list of what was happening that year.   You are quite tall…or are the rest short?

  9. Unknown's avatar Plain Jane says:

    Love it!
Is it your birthday? 1972 I was still a little one…born in 69 but I did love my 70s clothes!

1972…it was a very good year…we danced to crocadile rock,  my number in the draft was 69 and it wasnt abolitished until 73…oh and life was just beginning….we rode around in a Dodge Charger, Pontiac GTO, or a roadrunner…and worried about such silly thinhgs as how to pay for our next date…the deer hunt, or which course we\’d  play on saturday, or at which resort we wanted to ski…how is it that work seemed  to be optional?

  12. Unknown's avatar Thot says:

come to think of it….not much has changed…

I feel somewhat obliged to say that I do, in fact, feel like a young
30-something-year-old and yet, I felt grown up at 19. Most of the
\’news\’ items of the day are news to me now, as I was just a year old
and wouldn\’t have rememered any of it and none seemed ot make it to my
history books, either. In any case, what a fantastic way to remember
the time. The picture of you is GREAT.

  14. Unknown's avatar CAROL says:

HI..thanks for stopping by my space..another fellow MIchigander..I am in Calhoun County here!!! Just far enough away to NOT GET the lake effect snows..THANK GOD! I sure don\’t miss all that stuff but this morning it is so cold all my windows upstairs glazed over with frost. It is pretty but I can\’t see out of it!!! Stay warm and well over there!!  :  )

  15. Unknown's avatar Unknown says:

Love the pic! See, I\’m not the only person who thinks you are "tall!" He He! Of course, compared to your sisters and your daughters (and your mother), you are relatively tall. Wow, Aunt Debbie seems SO young – hardly old enough to get married.

  16. Unknown's avatar cybilsophia says:

Barb, you are quite the hottie! What a nice family picture. Have you been scanning in old pics into the computer? I need to spend a month doing that! It is so much easier to store that way, and you can make numerous copies.

No, I haven\’t been to Paris, but it is on my wish list! Thanks for being so faithful to stop by my site. I haven\’t been very good at making the rounds lately!

  17. Unknown's avatar Ruth says:

Such a wonderful picture with so many memories.  With everything digital these days and all my pictures on my computer or disks….I doubt if I well take the time to sort through them all.  Memories lost I\’m afraid.

  18. Unknown's avatar Suzalita says:

So interesting – I have a huge family on my mother\’s side and we also had big picnics with lots of people – they were fun! I was 12 in 1972 – and I loved the 70\’s! I loved the clothes and the new concepts for girls – that they can do whatever boys can do! WoW! I had 2 brothers and I loved that idea! I loved the ideas of ecology, my father (and most of the rest of the country) loved Archie Bunker – I liked Mary Tyler Moore – independent woman …fun memories!

  19. Unknown's avatar Cheryl says:

The Olympics deal and Nixion deal seems like it happened last year.  Of course the Nixion deal and worse is happening again but the congress won\’t act to protect the people like they did not the early 70\’s.
BTW is your mother still alive?

  20. Unknown's avatar Trish's Place says:

    Hi Barb,
Nice to hear from you. Hope your weekend is a good one.
What is going on with the fast track speed skaters from USA? The one guy refused to participate in the team relay and he won the gold last night in the 1500. He looks very angry and was notsmiling when interviewed last night. Not a good witness for our country.

1972…I hadn\’t been married too long, three years…had just had my first son…I remember watching the Nixon thing as I ironed…was a long time before I believed any of it…not so gullible anymore…

    Hi Barb,
Loved this blog. I so enjoy \’blasts from the past\’… so very interesting. Love looking at past photos as well. Beautiful photo of you Barb – like someone else mentioned in one of the comments – quite the hottie!! I also enjoyed reading about the historical facts of 1972. Hope you share more of the same with us. Take care x Eileen

You are beautiful in the picture.
1972…I was 3… So much has changed since then. Maybe I should write some changes in my life. Looking back, every year was a very good year.

  24. Unknown's avatar Carol says:

Happy monday Barb!  I\’m on my blog walk and I wanted to stop to say hi!

  25. Unknown's avatar Shirley says:

Hi Barbara … Thanks for stopping by my space.  I love your blogs … will be adding you to my \’must visit list\’!  The photo takes me back … 1972 seems a lifetime away and the fashions … I had almost forgotten.  Ladies, girls, gals … we all wore dresses!!!  And most likely hats for special occasions .. we have lost a lot of feminity, and I would love to see it come back full circle.  [Photos … now thats an idea for a blog!]

Thanks for the visit! I remember 1972…but I was only seven and life was sweet…we had a nice house , my parents were still married…the innocence of youth had not  been shattered….yet…but man those were the days!
