Has everyone forgotten that General Lee and all those other Confederate generals were not American heroes? They were in fact just the opposite: they were Confederate heroes; you know , those people who renounced their American citizenship in order to form their own country.
The Confederacy lost the war that followed. The United States of America won that war. Whoever heard of the victors in a war erecting statues honoring the losers?
Once we realize that, the question of whether or not to keep the statues becomes simple: NO. We honor OUR heroes. Confederate statues might go in a museum or a Confederate cemetery; not on our public lands.
Let reason prevail; please, God, just this once.
Amen to that! We lived in NC in the 60’s and it was incredible how much emphasis there was on the Civil War. Many thought the wrong side won. No doubt that sentiment still exists.
