Winter again

Or perhaps, winter still. I could have sworn it was spring a week or so ago: temps in the 70s, birds chirping and building nests; flowers blooming. How wrong I was. Winter, apparently, was just on a short vacation (to Michigan, judging by the weather my daughter’s been having.) Alas, it decided to re-visit us Virginians…and not one of us is happy about it. I mean, really, if I wanted snow in late March, I’d still live up north.

In the meantime, my back is improving…quite a lot, actually. I’m able to do some housework again (oh, yay) and grocery shopping didn’t put me down for the day. Fingers crossed…it’s been a long siege and I’m more than ready to get past it.

We are considering going out for a late lunch-early dinner today, but it’s cold and rainy, and whine, whine, whine. There’s a 50-50 chance we’ll leave our snug little house.

Don’s doing his laundry today, and I must say it’s nice to have a man who takes care of that for himself. There were years, when all the children were home and I was married, when I swore I spent half my day doing laundry. Don’t miss that AT ALL.

I think of my mother doing laundry in her ringer washer. All clothes were hung out to dry, and everything had to be ironed. Now that was LAUNDRY. I truly have no right to complain, I know, I know. Now we have a washer dryer conveniently located in the mudroom between house and garage. Super easy to throw things in on the way past. It’s the best laundry set-up I’ve ever had.

My grandmother’s approach to laundry was different than either my mother’s or mine. She refused to touch it. Instead, she hired the woman next door to be her laundress! No wonder that generation of women were the ones who won the right to vote!
