I can hardly believe I’m saying that, let alone feeling it. It’s 33 out there today….not even below freezing.
When I was a teen, we used to ice skate on the frozen creeks in our area. We thought ZERO was the perfect temperature for this activity. ZERO!! Even trickling creeks froze solid at that temperature, and if the sun was shining and we were dressed properly, it was ideal. And oh so beautiful. The frozen water glittered in the sun as we raced up and down our frozen highways! Ahhhh. That’s just one lovely memory from the 1950s.
We also spent a lot of time tobogganing down the long hills over by the cemetery. The walk up was a bit harder, but those flying trips down the hill! “Lean to the left; lean to the right!” I hope you have had that exhilarating experience, too.
I’m not sure today’s teens spend as much time outdoors as we used to. Our moms did not want us in the house for long periods of time. (mostly, not at all!) That left us free to skate, and toboggan, and just explore our great outdoors. Igloos in the front yard; snow angels; so much to do…and all the time in the world to do it!
